Blair Lawton

Running for Democratic Party Chair
Election: Jan. 21, 2017

Blair Lawton has proven his commitment to the future of our country and his community. We are proud to support Blair, who continues to fight at the grassroots level to respond to the needs of working families. Blair is an organizer and a progressive champion, who embodies the values that fueled the political revolution and knows how to bring new people into the political process.

Lawton grew up in Inwood, a town of 800 in northwestern Iowa and kicked off his political engagement working for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin. Lawton continued his work in Iowa with groups like Organizing for America (OFA) and Progress Iowa before becoming one of the first hires on U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign as the Iowa state Political Director.

Lawton has vowed to rebuild the Iowa Democratic Party from the grassroots up.

“Party-building means bringing new people into the Democratic Party — and keeping them here,” Lawton wrote in an op-ed for The Gazette. “I believe it’s the job of presidential campaigns to bring new people into the party. But it’s also the job of the state party to make sure those new people feel welcome. My experiences on the Obama and Bernie campaigns taught me that we have a lot of work to do on the latter part. I want to play my part in turning Iowa blue again, and serving as chair would allow me to focus full-time on making 2017 the year of party-building for the Iowa Democratic Party."

A new chair of the Iowa Democratic Party will be elected by the State Central Committee (SCC) on January 21.
