Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith is a proven fighter for Florida’s working families and students. In Nov. 2016, Rep. Smith made history as FL’s first openly-LGBTQ Latinx lawmaker, representing House District 49 in East Orlando. Since then, he co-founded and was elected Chairman of the Legislative Progressive Caucus. As a lawmaker, he has been a champion for civil rights, cannabis reform, gun safety, affordable higher education, mental health, and animal welfare. Out Magazine recognized Carlos as one of the “survivors and heroes of Pulse” for his outspokenness in support of those impacted by the Orlando tragedy. Carlos received numerous awards from the League of Women Voters of FL, the Florida Education Association, the Hispanic Federation, Mi Familia Vota, the Florida Council on American Islamic Relations, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, the Metropolitan Business Association and Equality Florida for his leadership.
