Our Candidates / California / Jimmy Gomez

Jimmy Gomez

Running for US Representative
Election: June 6, 2017

Gomez was born and raised in Southern California and is the youngest of six children. His parents and four of his siblings immigrated to California from Mexico in the early 1970’s. They brought with them a strong sense of family and a strong work ethic. To make ends meet, his mother and father often worked multiple jobs. His parent’s struggle to care for their family while trying to provide in times of illness and emergency, was the inspiration behind Gomez’s Paid Family Leave legislation. Strengthening families by improving access to education and healthcare and protecting the rights of workers has been a driving force behind many of Gomez’s legislative efforts.

Prior to serving in the State Assembly, Gomez served as Political Director of the United Nurses Association of California and brings with him over a decade of experience in local, state and national politics, including the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), National League of Cities, Democratic National Committee, office of former L.A. City Councilman Michael Feuer, and the office of former Congresswoman Hilda Solis.

Gomez is campaigning on the following platform:

  1. Health care for all

  2. Debt free college

  3. Comprehensive immigration reform that keeps families together, and bringing undocumented persons out of the shadows with a path to citizenship.

  4. As a former labor organizer, Jimmy supported the $15 California minimum wage and is committed to raising the national minimum wage, and securing worker protections under attack by the Trump Administration.

  5. Paid family leave for working families.

  6. Jimmy will continue to fight for environmental justice, preserving our natural resources, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, investing in mass transit, smart development and will make fighting the effects of climate change a priority.

  7. Campaign finance reform

  8. Women's rights. Jimmy will continue to protect women’s reproductive rights and equal pay.

  9. Criminal justice reform. Jimmy is a co-author of a bill to ban for-profit prisons in California and supports bail reform and sentencing reform for non-violent offenses.
