Vatsady Sivongxay

Running for Cambridge City Council
Massachusetts
Election: Nov. 7, 2017

Vatsady’s family arrived in the U.S. as Lao refugees when she was 4.5 years old.  Her parents started over as janitors and factory workers. So, she knew early on the barriers she had to overcome. Vatsady is running for City Council to continue increasing equitable access to opportunities for all and bring diverse voices to the decision-making table. She fought for such a vision in her law practice advising small businesses and immigrants and as the Policy Director for Boston District 7, partnering with diverse communities on issues relating to housing, economic development and education. Vatsady wants to translate these experiences into concrete actions for Cambridge residents. Vatsady is an attorney, community advocate and mother.

Issues:

  • Expand affordable housing for lower-to middle-income households in housing plan and inclusionary zoning requirements to achieve housing affordability and stability;
  • Build a stronger workforce development pipeline for youth and adults by increasing partnerships with higher education, research and nonprofit organizations, and engaging the business community to connect youth and adults with living wage jobs;
  • Create a community-led engagement process to meet development and infrastructure goals and ensure that all residents--especially underrepresented groups including communities of color, women, low-income residents, immigrants, people with disabilities, and small businesses have a voice; and,
  • Expand access to quality early education and childcare so that families have a chance to climb up the ladder of opportunity.
