WASHINGTON -- Our Revolution on Wednesday released the following statement after Michela Skelton’s close loss for Missouri House District 50:
“Michela Skelton’s campaign embodied everything that the progressive movement stands for and proves our message resonates in every corner of the country,” said Our Revolution Executive Director Shannon Jackson. “Skelton was able to build a competitive campaign this election without relying on the detrimental influence of big donors, and her commitment to putting people over corporate interests has reinvigorated progressives in her district. Although her campaign didn’t win this time around, Skelton has inspired and is a part of the powerful local movement that will be a force for years to come.”
No candidate has challenged the Republicans for District 50’s seat since the district was gerrymandered after the 2010 election. Michela, a former Bernie Sanders 2016 delegate to the Missouri Democratic convention, was able to build a powerful campaign through small-dollar fundraising and energetic support of the local grassroots. In total, Michela’s campaign received over 1,000 donations averaging about $64 apiece. Local Our Revolution group Our Revolution: Mid-Missouri held regular canvassing and phonebanking events for Michela’s race this summer.
“I am a single mother, work 10-hour days and help to organize Our Revolution: Mid-Missouri. Michela Skelton has earned every moment of my time and efforts,” said Debbie Dilks, Chair of Our Revolution: Mid-Missouri. “When I canvassed, I saw relief on the faces of some that had given up on any forthcoming help. And excitement from others when they heard how she was working hard to earn their votes.”
Our Revolution is committed to electing progressive leaders at every level of government as part of a powerful grassroots movement to transform the American political process. Our Revolution is proud to have supported Michela Skelton’s campaign, logging hundreds of calls and text messages, as well as fundraising on her behalf.
