Our Revolution Candidates Win Primaries in California, Iowa, and Montana

WASHINGTON--Our Revolution candidates claimed eight victories at every level of government in Tuesday’s primary elections in California, Iowa, and Montana. Over half of the victories were candidates of color, first-time candidates, and women.

“Our Revolution is proud of the work our supporters and local groups did across the country for all of our endorsed candidates,” said Our Revolution President Nina Turner. “Once again candidates that many would have counted out because they did not look like typical candidates or didn’t have the support of wealthy donors won because they had the support of the people. This is how we build a political revolution--one race, one district, and one city at a time.”

Our Revolution-backed primary victories:

  • First-time candidate Deidre DeJear won the primary for Iowa Secretary of State and is on track to become the first African American woman elected statewide.
  • J.D. Scholten, also a first-time candidate, won a Democratic primary for the 4th Congressional District. He’ll face infamous reactionary incumbent Rep. Steve King in November.
  • Jennifer Merecki is a long time activist and Our Revolution group leader in Montana who is running for State Senate in District 22.
  • Audrey Denney came in first in a pack of candidates to face the incumbent Republican Member of Congress in California’s 1st Congressional District.
  • Ammar Campa-Najjar is Latino-Arab American and former Obama White House official running to represent California in the US House of Representatives. He will face scandal-ridden Rep. Duncan Hunter in the General Election.
  • First-time candidate James Elia ran on a platform defending financial regulations that are being rolled back. He is heading to a runoff for California’s 71st State Assembly District.
  • Monica Montgomery won her primary and is headed to the runoff election for San Diego City Council, District 4.
  • Steve Madrone was backed by labor the environmental groups and defeated a pro-business incumbent to win Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.

“We know that not all of our endorsed candidates will win every election, but we recognize that by running they are doing the necessary work to advance the values we share--expanding health care to everyone, raising the minimum wage to $15, protecting our environment, and reducing income and wealth inequality,” Turner added.

Our Revolution supports progressive champions at every level of government. By supporting candidates backed by people, not corporations, we are aiming to transform American politics to make our political and economic systems responsive to the needs of working families. With this election, we are one step closer to accomplishing that goal.
