Our Revolution Celebrates New York State Legislative Primary Victories

WASHINGTON, D.C.--In Tuesday’s New York state primary five Our Revolution candidates advanced to the General Election. In the legislature, Our Revolution candidates took power from the corporate-controlled New York state Democrats who for years blocked progressive legislation. Winning primary candidates include Alessandra Biaggi (SD-34), Rachel May (SD-53), Zellnor Myrie (SD-20), Jessica Ramos (SD-13), and Julia Salazar (SD-18).

“Our candidates, both those who won and the courageous statewide candidates, Cynthia Nixon, Jumaane Williams, and Zephyr Teachout, truly softened the soil. We made tremendous progress in the Empire State in all races, especially in the legislature challenging the corporate control of the state Democratic Party,” said Our Revolution President Nina Turner. “Clearing the path to elected office for progressive contenders, who are sometimes non-traditional candidates, is a key part of the transformative work of Our Revolution. These successes prove that when we commit to progressive values and organize, we can win change for the people.”

Our Revolution endorsed several candidates running against members of the now dissolved, Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), which had been the key force allowing Governor Cuomo to block real change in Albany.

“We made history. We showed New York that progressive insurgents are stronger than the machine. We said every immigrant deserves equal access to education. We said every public school kid deserves fully-funded classrooms. We said every New Yorker deserves a fair criminal justice system. And we said it’s about time to fix the subway. The years of a state government delivering for real estate and corporate interests instead of working families is over. I’m here to tell working families in Queens and across New York: from now on, your government works for you,” said State Senate candidate Jessica Ramos (SD-13).

"This election was never about me; it was about the movement for health care, housing, and justice for all that is sweeping the country,” said State Senate candidate Julia Salazar (SD-18). “This election proves that voters know the status quo is unacceptable; we need radical change to create a society that works for the many, not just the 1%."

“We made history. Together, we defeated the IDC and set the stage for a progressive majority to take control in November,” added State Senate candidate Zellnor Myrie (SD-20). “This campaign has been about what we want our state government to do. Now, we have the mandate to make this state work for the many, not just the few. This victory is for tenants, immigrants, and students in New York who have been desperate for a real advocate in the State Senate. We changed New York politics for the better.”

From Medicare for All to affordable housing to making the MTA function for all New Yorkers, these state legislative candidates will fight for an agenda that centers the needs of working people, not moneyed interests.

With over 600 groups in 49 states and nine countries, Our Revolution supports progressive champions at every level of government. By supporting candidates backed by people, not corporations, we are aiming to transform American politics to make our political and economic systems responsive to the needs of working families.
