Our Revolution is proud to endorse Athena Aguiar for Eugene City Council, Ward 5 — a grassroots candidate running to make Eugene safer, more affordable, more inclusive, and more responsive to the people who call it home.
Athena is running with a vision for local government that delivers where people feel it most: affordable housing, strong public services, accessible transportation, lower costs, and safe, welcoming communities.
At a time when families are getting squeezed by rising costs, Athena wants Eugene to build more housing — especially for low- and middle-income residents — while expanding Bus Rapid Transit and making it easier and safer to get around by adding protected bike lanes and sidewalks.
She also wants to tackle two major expenses hitting working families: childcare and energy bills. Athena supports state efforts to create Universal Pre-K and wants the city to work with businesses and childcare providers to expand sponsored programs. She’s also calling for taxing big corporate profits to fund energy efficiency and weatherization that can lower household energy costs.
Athena understands that strong communities need strong public services. She is committed to protecting funding for Eugene’s libraries, parks, and recreational facilities and fully funding crisis-response programs like CAHOOTS so people experiencing a crisis can get accessible care while freeing up traditional emergency responders.
And she isn’t afraid to stand up for Eugene’s values.
Athena wants the city to enforce Oregon’s sanctuary laws and cease cooperation with ICE, prevent Eugene from working with companies that have facilitated deportations, defend LGBTQ+ rights, and make Eugene a more welcoming community for people of color.
She’s also bringing the climate fight to City Hall — supporting building electrification, action to reduce transportation emissions, and reforms that give industry less influence.
This is what local progressive leadership should look like: taking on big corporate interests while fighting for affordable housing, lower costs, public services, climate action, and a community where everyone belongs.
