NEW Survey: Confidence in Democrats Tanking as Grassroots Voters Feel Pain of Trump Policies
Latest Our Revolution Survey of Progressive Voters Finds Nearly 60% Expect to Be Directly Harmed by Trump’s Policies—28% Say They or a Family Member Already Have—Yet Only 3% are Very Confident in Democratic Leadership to Stop It
WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the policies of President Trump’s second-term administration take shape—slashing Medicaid, threatening Social Security, gutting labor protections, and fueling mass deportations—progressives are not just warning of future harm; many are already experiencing the devastating effects firsthand.
A new survey conducted by Our Revolution, the nation’s largest progressive political organizing group, finds that a majority of grassroots Democrats fear for their livelihoods under Trump’s agenda while expressing deep frustration over the Democratic Party’s failure to mount a real fight.
Fielded from Saturday, March 8, to Sunday, March 9, the survey reached 3,000 progressive, rank-and-file Democratic voters from Our Revolution’s nationwide base. The results highlight both the immediate impact of Trump’s policies and a crisis of confidence in Democratic leadership.
“The message from this survey is clear: Grassroots voters have almost zero confidence that Democratic leaders will do what’s necessary to fight Trump’s policies,” said Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Our Revolution. “Democrats cannot afford to ‘play dead’ like some of their consultants are advising. As Trump is slashing programs that millions rely on, voters want Democrats to do more than wait for Trump to self-saboataoge.”
Key Findings:
- More than 90% of respondents disapprove of Democratic leadership’s response, describing it as weak (48%), disappointing (23%), or unacceptable (19%).
- Over 80% of respondents cite healthcare cuts, mass layoffs, and increased corporate power as top concerns, yet only 3% have full confidence that Democrats will fight back effectively.
- Nearly 60% of respondents expect to be directly impacted by Trump’s policies, while 28% say they or a family member already have been.
- 56% say they have no confidence that the Democratic Party will do what’s necessary to fight back.Nearly 2 in 3 (62%) say they are willing to mobilize to stop Medicaid cuts and other destructive policies—showing that grassroots energy exists if Democrats are willing to engage it.
Personal Stories: The Human Toll of Trump’s Policies
The survey’s open-ended responses paint a devastating picture of how Trump’s agenda is already upending the lives of working families, immigrants, and vulnerable communities. Respondents detailed widespread fears about losing healthcare, struggling with financial instability, and facing direct threats from Trump’s policies—with many already experiencing the consequences.
Among the most pressing concerns identified from respondents:
- Loss of Healthcare and Public Benefits – Many respondents rely on Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and Social Security to survive, and they fear cuts could leave them without access to life-saving care. One respondent wrote, “If I lose Medicaid, I lose my insulin. If I lose my insulin, I die.” Another expressed deep anxiety over potential disability benefit cuts, asking, “What do they expect people like me to do? Just disappear?”
- Fear of Deportation and Family Separation – Immigrant families, including those with U.S. citizen children, are living in fear of mass deportations. A respondent who has lived in the U.S. for decades shared, “I work, I pay taxes, my kids are U.S. citizens. I am terrified of being torn away from them.” Another added, “If Trump wins, I may have to leave. Even though this is my home.”
- Job Loss and Economic Instability – With federal layoffs, rising prices, and labor protections under threat, many respondents are bracing for financial ruin. “I already live paycheck to paycheck. If they cut more jobs, I don’t know what I’ll do,” one person shared. Another pointed to growing inequality, saying, “Billionaires are getting richer while people like me are being left behind.”
- Political Violence and Democracy at Risk – Many respondents fear that Trump’s return to power will lead to greater authoritarianism, embolden extremist violence, and put marginalized communities in greater danger. One respondent wrote, “I don’t feel safe anymore. If Trump wins, people like me will be in danger.” Another summed up the widespread anxiety, saying, “This country feels unrecognizable. I’m scared for my kids.”
These responses underscore the deep, personal toll that Trump’s policies are already taking on millions of people. They are not just worried about political rhetoric—they are terrified for their survival. The overwhelming fear captured in these stories makes clear that Democrats must do more than offer vague opposition to Trump’s agenda. People need real leadership, real solutions, and a real fight to stop these devastating policies before they do irreparable harm.
