Vermont Prop 3: Put Workers’ Rights in the Constitution
The right to organize shouldn’t depend on who is in power. It should be a fundamental right.
That’s why Our Revolution is proud to support Vermont Proposal 3, the Workers’ Rights Amendment that would enshrine the right to organize and collectively bargain in the Vermont Constitution.
On November 3, Vermonters have the opportunity to put worker power directly into their state’s Declaration of Rights.
Proposal 3 would establish that employees have the right to organize or join a labor organization and bargain collectively over wages, hours, working conditions, and workplace safety. It would also prohibit future state laws from interfering with or diminishing those collective bargaining rights.
That matters.
For generations, unions have given working people a way to stand together and demand a voice on the job. When workers can organize collectively, they have power to negotiate with employers instead of facing them alone.
And Proposal 3 is about protecting that power for the long haul.
The amendment would prevent Vermont from adopting a so-called “right-to-work” law that undermines union agreements. Instead of leaving fundamental organizing rights vulnerable to changing political winds, Vermont voters can give those rights constitutional protection.
This is a chance to send a powerful message: working people have a fundamental right to organize for better wages, safer workplaces, and better lives.
Proposal 3 has already cleared a significant hurdle. It passed the Vermont Senate unanimously, 29–0, and won the Vermont House 125–15, sending the question directly to voters.
Now, the final decision belongs to the people of Vermont.
At Our Revolution, we believe rebuilding worker power is essential to taking on concentrated corporate wealth and creating an economy that works for everyone. Workers should have the freedom to come together, organize a union, and negotiate collectively without worrying that those rights could disappear with the next election.
Worker power is people power.
This November, Vermont can put that principle into its Constitution — and protect it for generations to come.
