Survey of 2,000 Progressives Reveals Alarming Crisis of Confidence in Democratic Leadership as Trump Returns to the White House

In the new survey published by Our Revolution, only 14% of respondents express strong confidence that Democratic leaders will work to block the worst of the Trump agenda.

Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese is available to comment on the survey results and the future of progressive activism during Trump’s second term.

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Our Revolution, the nation’s largest progressive political organizing group, is releasing the findings of a sweeping new survey of more than 2,000 of the organization’s members conducted in the immediate aftermath of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The respondents, a subset of Our Revolution’s grassroots network of approximately 8 million supporters in all 50 states, include rank-in-file Democratic Party activists and base voters, many of whom supported Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 presidential primary.

Topline findings from the survey reveal that:

  • Only 14% of respondents indicated that they are ‘very confident’ that the Democratic Party and its leaders in Congress, state houses, and city halls will work to block the worst of the Trump agenda.

  • Following the inauguration, 43% of respondents said they are angry, and another 40% said they’re feeling worried, scared or sad.

  • When asked to select from a list of Trump White House policy priorities, respondents ranked these as their top three concerns:
  • Slashing critical public programs like Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, gutting departments of education and public health, and more
  • Destabilizing the economy with high tariffs, de-regulating crypto, more Trump tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, and empowering to Oligarchs like Musk and Bozos
  • Declaring a national emergency to “drill baby drill,” expanding fossil fuel extraction and reversing environmental protections as climate chaos intensifies

“These survey results point to an undeniable crisis of confidence in Democratic leadership at a time of unprecedented corporate takeover of the American federal government,” said Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese. “As Trump and his billionaire benefactors declare all-out war on the working-class, the only effective counterweight to their extreme MAGA agenda will be a Democratic Party that is ready to take on corporate influence and embrace a true populist, working-class vision for the country. Our Revolution is committed to holding the Trump administration accountable while also pushing for real reforms and calling out hypocrisy within the ranks of the Democratic Party.”

TRUMP’S INAUGURAL SPEECH SIGNALS AN ADMINISTRATION BUILT ON FEAR, CORPORATE LOYALTY, AND A RETURN TO A NEW GILDED AGE

TRUMP’S INAUGURAL SPEECH SIGNALS AN ADMINISTRATION BUILT ON FEAR, CORPORATE LOYALTY, AND A RETURN TO A NEW GILDED AGE

In his inaugural address, Trump outlined an agenda that cements an alliance of state and corporate power, ushering in a new Gilded Age where billionaires and tech CEOs take precedence over working Americans. His promises prioritize fear-mongering and corporate interests over the real crises facing working-class Americans.

Washington, D.C.  — Following Donald J. Trump’s inaugural speech, Our Revolution Executive Director, Joseph Geevarghese issued the following statement:

“Trump’s inauguration made it unmistakably clear that there is an unholy alliance between state and corporate power. His presidency is set to openly serve the billionaire class—not working people. The visual of the event says it all.  While tech CEOs and oligarchs were given center stage, there was a glaring absence of any working people — gone were the hard hats, sanitation and McDonald’s workers who were used as props on the campaign trail.

As for the substance of his speech, the forgotten men and women of America seemed to be forgotten again. There was no mention of improving wages or expanding protections for workers who keep our economy running every day — but Trump was keen to focus on how he’ll funnel our tax dollars to Elon Musk’s mission to Mars and the oil and gas executives so they can “drill baby drill.” His rhetoric of division and manufactured crises is a dangerous distraction from the true emergencies threatening our nation: skyrocketing inequality, climate change, and the erosion of workers’ rights.

In his inaugural speech, Trump outlined several troubling priorities, including his intent to sign executive orders around the following:

  • Environmental Rollbacks and Climate Denial: Trump falsely claimed he would “roll back the Green New Deal,” despite the fact that it was never implemented. This rhetoric is a thinly veiled attack on the historic climate legislation passed under President Biden, which made significant investments in clean energy and environmental protections. Trump’s pledge to declare a “national energy emergency” and expand fossil fuel production prioritizes corporate polluters over working families who face the harshest impacts of climate change.
  • Economic Policies That Betray Working Families: While Trump spoke about addressing inflation, his proposals center on deregulation, tax cuts for the wealthy, and gutting workplace protections. These measures do nothing to alleviate the economic struggles of working families, including immigrant workers, who continue to bear the brunt of inequality.
  • Potential Pardon of January 6th Insurrectionists: While not declared in his speech, Trump has signaled his intent to pardon those convicted for their involvement in the January 6th insurrection. This would set a dangerous precedent, embolden elements of his far-right supporters, and provide a license for political violence and retribution against those fighting for economic justice, racial equality, and inclusion.

Our Revolution is ready to fight back against the worst of the Trump administration—the hypocrisy, the self-dealing, and the attacks on our people and planet. We will also employ a strategy of pressuring Trump to live up to his rhetoric aimed at improving life for working people— such as bringing back manufacturing jobs and cutting the Pentagon budget.

Our Revolution is committed to holding this administration accountable while pushing for real solutions that prioritize the working class over corporate interests. We are not going to allow Trump and the Trump family to privatize our government and plunder our tax dollars to enrich themselves and their cronies in the billionaire class.

OUR REVOLUTION CONDEMNS TRUMP’S PARDONS OF JANUARY 6 RIOTERS AS AN ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY AND THE RULE OF LAW

OUR REVOLUTION CONDEMNS TRUMP’S PARDONS OF JANUARY 6 RIOTERS AS AN ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY AND THE RULE OF LAW

Trump’s mass pardons and commutations for January 6 rioters send a chilling message: political violence in service to his agenda will not only be excused but rewarded. This dangerous precedent undermines the rule of law, emboldens far-right extremists, and imperils our democracy.

Washington, D.C.  — In response to President Donald Trump’s issuance of mass pardons and commutations for individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol,  Our Revolution Executive Director, Joseph Geevarghese issued the following statement:

“Trump’s pardons of January 6 rioters, including those convicted of violence against law enforcement, mark a grave and unprecedented attack on the rule of law and American democracy. This move not only erases accountability for one of the darkest days in our nation’s history but also emboldens far-right extremists and grants them free license to continue their ideological reign of terror.

These are not patriots, these are traitors who will now be free to recruit others into what Trump views as his own personal militia.

By granting clemency to these individuals, who sought to overturn the peaceful transfer of power, Trump is signaling that political violence and the rejection of democratic norms are acceptable tactics in service to his authoritarian agenda. This is a direct threat to the foundations of our democracy and the safety of our communities.”

Trump’s unprecedented use of clemency to absolve individuals who attacked the Capitol sends a clear and chilling message: political violence can be excused when it serves his authoritarian agenda. Trump is brazenly eroding the rule of law and undermining the accountability necessary to deter future violence.

This act will undoubtedly embolden extremist groups, giving them a sense of impunity to continue their dangerous campaigns of violence and intimidation. It also sets a precedent that political loyalty can override the rule of law, weakening trust in our institutions and jeopardizing the democratic principles that hold our nation together.

As Trump dismantles the rule of law and cements alliances between authoritarian power and corporate wealth, the principles of democracy and justice are under assault. This is not just an attack on accountability—it is an attack on working people, whose voices are being silenced and whose needs are being ignored in favor of billionaires and extremists.

We must hold a light to Trump’s authoritarianism and the ways it fails working people, and in doing so, build a stronger, more resilient progressive movement. Our fight is against the dawn of a new Gilded Age, one that enriches the few at the expense of the many. We must offer an alternative rooted in justice, equality, and a vision of government that serves the people, not the powerful.

That’s why Our Revolution is committed to:

  • Demanding Accountability: Ensuring that extremists and enablers of political violence face consequences, rejecting any normalization of authoritarianism.
  • Organizing for Justice: Mobilizing communities to resist extremism and building a movement centered on working class dignity and rights of all people.
  • Fighting for a Progressive Future: Fighting for policies that empower working people, expand democracy, and protect institutions from the grip of oligarchy and corporate dominance.

73 Percent of Democrats Believe a Strong, Working-Class Economic Agenda is Necessary to Boost Harris’ Chances of Beating Trump

According to the survey of more than 34,000 likely progressive voters, confidence levels of Democrats defeating Trump have more than doubled since Biden bowed out, but 1 in 3 remain unsure that Harris will prevail.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Our Revolution, the largest grassroots-funded progressive political organizing group in the United States, is releasing the findings of a sweeping new survey of more than 34,000 Democratic voters across the country. The respondents, a subset of the organization’s grassroots network of approximately 8 million supporters in all 50 states, were surveyed via email from July 22 to 24 and again from July 29 to 31.

Half of respondents surveyed reported earning below $125,000 annually, with one third bringing home under $50,000 a year. Topline findings from the survey reveal that:

  • The vast majority of Democratic voters (85 percent) are relieved and encouraged by President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside as the Party’s nominee.
  • Nearly all respondents (94 percent) say they remain worried about a second Trump presidency.
  • 30 percent of survey respondents feel uncertain Harris can beat Trump. In a previous, post-debate survey, just 30% of Democrats expressed confidence that Biden would win re-election.
  • A strong majority of Democratic voters, 73 percent, believe that committing to a strong, working-class economic agenda will increase Harris’ chances of beating Trump.

“These results underscore the substantial boost in excitement we’re seeing with Harris at the top of the ticket, but translating this newfound energy into actual votes won’t happen on its own,” said Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Our Revolution. “If Democrats are going to retain the White House in November, we have to get behind a strong, working-class economic agenda that speaks directly to the most pressing concerns of young people, progressives, and swing state voters alike — a substantial block of which are still concerned about Harris’ ability to beat Trump. These are the kind of policies that will rebuild trust and generate enduring enthusiasm that translates into votes and volunteer activism heading into the election.”

Survey respondents made clear that Harris needs to come out as a strong leader willing to take on the corporate elite and powerful special interests, who will deliver on economic and environmental issues that directly address voters’ quality of life and put government back on the side of working people.

When asked which policies would turn out more voters in support of the Vice President in key battleground states and across the country, respondents ranked
campaign finance reform and holding corporations accountable as their top choices. Voters want to see a commitment to getting big money out of politics and breaking the corporate capture of government to clear the way for real policy change.

The survey results indicated broad support for specific policies focused on climate action (to end fossil fuel subsidies, lower energy costs and create new jobs), health care (end medical debt and expand Medicare to include dental, hearing, and vision), a permanent ceasefire in Gaza (and an end endless wars to redirect defense spending), and create affordable housing (plus a federal 5% cap on rent prices). Other priorities included raising the federal minimum wage, growing unions through labor law reform, and universal childcare.

“These findings make clear that the Harris campaign’s recent reversals to oppose a ban on fracking and a single-payer health insurance program will dampen progressive enthusiasm which she will need heading into November,” Geevarghese added.

Last November, political scientists from Stony Brook University and the College of William and Mary conducted an extensive survey of the Our Revolution network to better understand the composition of the organization’s support base. According to findings, the vast majority (80 percent) of Our Revolution supporters identify as Democrats, with three-fourths of respondents reporting that, beyond just voting, they contributed money, canvassed, or otherwise directly participated in electoral activities on behalf of Democratic candidates for House, senate, or local races in the 2022 midterm elections.

Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Our Revolution, is available to discuss these survey findings and the path to a Democratic victory in 2024. To schedule an interview, contact: media@ourrevolution.com.
