Abortion is on the Ballot in Ohio

By Policy Fights

Abortion is on the ballot in Ohio, and we have a chance to shut down this new rightwing playbook to attack our rights. Our Revolution has been organizing for months to make sure Issue 1 passes, and we preserve reproduction rights in the Buckeye State and beyond.

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a small but loud group of deep-pocketed extremists took to the states, determined to gut abortion laws. But the resistance has been real.

Thanks to grassroots funding, armies of volunteers, and organizations like Our Revolution, we have a real shot at enshrining a woman’s right to abortion access in the Ohio constitution.

2023 General Election Guide

By Progressive Champions

The 2023 General Election is on Tuesday, and Our Revolution is mobilizing voters to the polls to elect progressive champions in cities and states nationwide!

Meet our candidates below, and be sure to get out to vote to help build local power and build progressive majorities that can make a direct impact in people’s lives.

Our Revolution has been blazing a path for progressive cities in 2023, from winning a progressive majority with Board President Megan Green in St. Louis and helping elect Mayor Brandon Johnson in Chicago. Now we have a chance to bolster progressive power in Pittsburg with Sara Innamorato!

We backed Sara as she beat big money back in May to win the primary and on Tuesday, she’ll be on the ballot to become the next Allegheny County Executive!

If she wins, Sara will be part of a progressive trifecta in Pittsburg that includes Mayor Ed Gainey and U.S. Rep Summer Lee, whom she ran alongside successfully for PA House back in 2018 with Our Revolution support.

As County Executive, Sara will lead the second-largest county in Pennsylvania and have the power to help protect abortion care, push for county-wide housing, and address human rights violations in the county jail.

With Our Revolution’s slate of progressives, Democrats could win back power in Virginia – and maintain the last bastion of abortion rights in the South.

Nadarius Clark, Rozia Henson, Adele McClure, and Joshua Cole are all vying for key seats in the Virginia State House, while Jennifer Carroll Foy, Stella Pekarsky, and Lachrecse Aird could win races that block a Republican takeover of the State Senate. This is critical since Governor Glenn Youngkin said he would sign any abortion ban the Virginia legislature sends to his desk.

Jared Evans is running for re-election to a third term on the Indianapolis City Council – and Our Revolution is proud to have his back!

Jared has been a strong progressive ally in Indianapolis, fighting for higher wages, good jobs, and more for the blue-collar neighborhoods he serves in District 17.

Juan Marcano is the proud son of Puerto Rican migrants and has been a voice for working-class people representing Ward 4 on the Aurora, Colorado City Council since 2019.

Now, Our Revolution is proud to endorse Juan to lead the city in a progressive direction as Mayor. We know the city in a progressive direction as Mayor. We know he will champion education, affordable housing, and economic and social justice at the helm.

Our Revolution is endorsing Sheila Jackson Lee for Houston Mayor, who’s running against John Whitmire – a Democratic defector who sides with radical Republicans on voter suppression and racist policing policies.

U.S. Rep Jackson Lee is a long-time member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and she’s a fighter for Medicare for All, the Raise the Wage Act, and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

As the next Mayor, she’s committed to promoting policies to expand healthcare, create good jobs, increase affordable housing, promote safe and reliable public transportation, and protect the city from climate disasters.

She’s also been endorsed by SEIU Texas, the Communications Workers of America, and other key Our Revolution allies.

“Sheila is taking on far-right groups, corporate lobbyists, and establishment politicians – including billionaire Trump donors, the NRA, Republican anti-abortion zealots, and knee-jerk backers of Gov. Abbott’s autocratic political agenda,” Our Revolution Board Member and former TX Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower said.

“The fat cats are against her – but we are pushing hard for her, and there are many more of us than them. They key is turning out our voters, and we know how to do that!” Hightower added.

Greater Worcester Our Revolution is supporting Robert Billota for City Council in Worcester, MA.

Robert is running for this seat because he believes Worcester should be a place where everyone can build a prosperous future. He has served on Worcester Human Rights Commission and is a member of the Worcester Affordable Housing Coalition.

Our Revolution Ohio is proudly endorsing Andrej Rotter for Upper Arlington City Council to give back to the community he says has given him so much.

Andrej and his family were political refugees from Czechoslovakia, and he is a retired scientist, teacher, and mentor. He is committed to environmental sustainability, fighting climate change, and economic security.

Barbara Lee Calls for Peace

By Progressive Champions

As atrocities are carried out in the Middle East and far right voices grow louder in Congress, it’s clear why progressives must unify now to grow our ranks and work for global peace and prosperity.

On Tuesday, we must defeat rightwing extremists at the ballot box and save abortion rights in states like Ohio and Virginia. And, we must start working now for 2024 to take back the House and elect progressives like Barbara Lee – the only candidate for the U.S. Senate in California to call for a ceasefire in Israel/Palestine.

Check out this latest LA Times article on why Barbara is the Peace Candidate in this race compared to her opponents Katie Porter and Adam Schiff.

Our Revolution stands with U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee, Cori Bush, Summer Lee and our other progressive allies in Congress who are calling for an end to the violence.

Barbara Lee Speaks Truth to Power

By Progressive Champions

“The reason Gavin Newsom didn’t appoint Barbara Lee is the reason she should be a senator,” wrote John Nichols in The Nation.

Barbara Lee has a “tradition of speaking truth to power” — and she’s the most progressive, most experienced candidate in the race. Newsom promised to choose a black woman to fill the vacancy, but he passed over Barbara Lee for a corporate Democratic insider who has lobbied for Airbnb and Uber.

The political establishment is clearly threatened by Barbara Lee and don’t want to see her team up with Bernie Sanders in the Senate. That’s why grassroots and progressive leaders like Ro Khanna, Cori Bush, Pramila Jayapal, and others are rallying behind Barbara.

Barbara Lee has been in the trenches from Day 1 for workers, climate, peace, Medicare for All, and more — and she can win this election on the merits.

Progressives Beat Back Power Grab in Virginia

By Party Work

Our progressive coalition beat back a power grab by establishment Democrats that would have disenfranchised thousands of grassroots party members.

Virginia Democrats rejected a change to state party rules that would have altered how the commonwealth’s DNC delegates are elected, TYT reports.

This is a major win for progressives! Our Revolution Northern Virginia’s Sandra Klassen (who is also a State Central Committee Member of the VA Dem Party) was thrilled that “all of our work and our allies paid off!”.

ARE YOU RUNNING TO BE A DELEGATE TO THE DNC NEXT YEAR? If so, we want to hear from you. Please reach out to political@ourrevolution.com.

Teresa Mosqueda and Jorge Baron are in the lead for King County Council seats, along with Tammy Morales for Seattle City Council, and the trio appear to be heading to the general election in November.

Each of them have shown they will have our back and our fight for progressive values. Thank you to the support and activism of Our Revolution members in Washington whose democratic input and activism made these wins possible!

Big Win on Student Debt

By Policy Fights

News broke on Friday that President Biden canceled $39 billion in student debt for 800,000 borrowers through administrative fixes.

This big win comes after Our Revolution hosted a live Student Debt Town Hall with Rep. Ro Khanna where our members shared powerful stories and discussed our inside-outside push.

The President can still use his executive authority to cancel debt, pause payments, and crack down on predatory lending practices.

“The President should cancel student debt in the Higher Education Act. He should zero out the accounts,” Ro told us on Monday. “If the Supreme Court rules against us then let’s see if they actually enforce the collection of debt that has already ben canceled.”

“Congress has given the Executive the power to do this. The President needs to push and invoke these authorities and cancel it,” Ro said. “We’ve got to be assertive at a time that the other side is taking action that is unconstitutional.”

While Rep. Khanna teams up with progressive lawmakers to work the levers of power from the inside, on a parallel outside track, we’re organizing our grassroots members to flood comments into the Secretary of Education to show the strength of our demand.

Aaron Regunberg Pulls Away

By Progressive Champions

Aaron Regunberg has started to pull away as the front-runner in this crowded field for Congress just days ahead of Election Day – good timing that comes after a big rally with Bernie Sanders last weekend.

Our Revolution members felt the excitement in the room for Regunberg, who has delivered paid sick days and higher wages for Rhode Islanders. In his day job as a lawyer, he’s held Big Oil accountable for environmental crimes.

“Friends, we’re gonna win this thing, and we’re going to take these fights all the way to Congress,” Aaron told the crowd. “This is a district that can support more than just another Democrat, we can elect someone who is going to organize up there.”

Bernie addressed a packed house for Aaron, saying: “This is not just about electing another member of Congress. We need leadership with the courage to take on the incredible power of the 1 percent.”

“Brothers and sisters, this is a fight that Aaron alone will not be waging, that I alone will not be waging – now is the time for a political revolution of working families coming together to tell the people on top this country belongs to all of us,” Bernie said.

Raising the Tipped Wage in Chicago

By Policy Fights

Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday delivered on his campaign promise to eliminate the “subminimum wage” for tipped workers!

The new law calls for tipped workers — currently paid 60% of Chicago’s minimum wage — to receive 8% annual increases beginning next July until they reach 100% parity in 2028, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

In July, Mayor Brandon Johnson joined us to serve up food to restaurant workers and raise awareness in this fight. Our own members submitted testimony directly, and we just won!

Our Revolution organizers also testified at a hearing in Montgomery County, MD this week to build pressure for the tipped wage bill voters overwhelmingly supported to be implemented without letting restaurants shift the burden to diners under the guise of “service charges.”

And, stay tuned! In Ohio and Arizona, Our Revolution has teams canvassing for signatures for petition drives that will put a $20+ MINIMUM WAGE directly on the ballot in 2024.

Leah Perkel for City Council

By Progressive Champions

Our Revolution is endorsing progressive grassroots organizer Leah Perkel for City Council in Vancouver, WA (Position 6)!

Leah is an Our Revolution member and a former Bernie delegate. She has firsthand experience with medical debt resulting from our lousy private health insurance system, and she wants to be an agent of change to help create healthier people and communities.

Leah will stand up to the big money interests and be a voice for the people on affordable housing, the environment, equity, and more. She has also been endorsed by OneAmerica, founded by US Rep. Pramila Jayapal.
