There is the overwhelming frustration that the Democratic establishment is failing to build a True Opposition that will STAND UP and DEFEAT Trump, and Bernie isn’t mincing his words about Establishment Democrats:
“If we waited on them to defeat Trumpism and move our country forward, we’d be waiting forever. So it is up to us.”
Last week David Hogg, a DNC vice chair, announced that his PAC, Leaders We Deserve, is launching a $20 million campaign that will include supporting younger, progressive candidates to run in primaries against incumbent Democrats.
It’s a bold initiative, and we wanted to understand how our movement feels about primarying Democratic incumbents who lack the grassroots support and fighting spirit needed to defeat Trump.
We surveyed more than 4,000 politically active progressives and Democrat-leaning voters:
- 87% say the Dem party lost its way — up from 76% in our post-presidential election poll.
- 92% say Our Revolution should support primary challenges to establishment Democrats who are not generating grassroots energy.
- 88% say the DSCC/DCCC should stop automatically supporting incumbents.
- 70% are not confident that the Democratic Party will do what’s necessary to fight back against Trump’s disastrous policies.
- 96% think Our Revolution should continue to work to Transform the Democratic Party by electing progressives at every level of the party structure.
- 82% say Democrats should stop accepting Big Money donations from billionaires and corporations to fund its electoral activities.
- Respondents are most worried about Trump creating a Constitutional crisis by overriding judicial orders and efforts to slash critical programs like Medicaid and Social Security.

“We’re running out of time.”
A recent poll confirms that the vast majority of Democrats agree with Bernie—72% support abandoning a cautious, centrist approach when confronting Trump and his far-right allies.
If we’re going to meet the urgency of Trump’s renewed threat, we cannot sit back and wait for the Democratic Party establishment to get serious about building the kind of inclusive, energized movement our moment demands: we have no choice but to transform the Democratic Party from within.
