MEDIA AVAILABILITY: OUR REVOLUTION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOSEPH GEEVARGHESE AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT ON HOUSE GOP BUDGET AND ITS IMPACT ON WORKING FAMILIES

House Republicans Pass Budget That Cuts Medicaid and Food Assistance While Providing Trillions in Tax Breaks for the Wealthy

Washington, D.C.  —  Following a House GOP vote to pass a budget that slashes Medicaid by nearly $1 trillion, cuts food assistance by $230 billion, and rolls back climate and social program funding while providing massive tax breaks for corporations and the ultra-wealthy,  Our Revolution is calling for strong opposition in the Senate and public mobilization to stop these cuts.

Joseph Geevarghese, Our Revolution Executive Director is available to provide commentary and analysis on:

  • The impact of these cuts on working families, seniors, and red-state communities who stand to lose access to essential healthcare and food assistance.
  • The political consequences of this vote and how this decision could affect vulnerable House Republicans in swing districts and the broader fight against oligarchy.
  • The role of Senate Democrats and why grassroots groups are demanding they use every procedural tool available to stop these cuts and what a real opposition strategy looks like.
  • The broader implications for democracy and how this budget reflects a growing consolidation of power and resources among the wealthiest Americans.

“House Republicans have made their priorities clear: more tax breaks for billionaires while slashing Medicaid and food assistance for working families. This budget is a direct attack on the economic security of millions, and Senate Democrats must do everything in their power to block it. The American people should not be forced to sacrifice their healthcare and livelihoods to benefit the ultra-rich.” Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director, Our Revolution

This budget will have serious consequences for millions of Americans, particularly in red and rural communities, and will be a defining issue heading into 2026. Our Revolution is actively organizing in key districts to hold lawmakers accountable for their votes and mobilizing grassroots pressure to stop this budget in the Senate.

NOBODY ELECTED ELON MUSK. The world’s richest man is illegally rifling through our government for ways to cut programs like Medicaid and Social Security — in order to pay for trillions in tax cuts for the ultra wealthy! It’s sick.

Trump is unleashing vicious attacks on crucial social programs, vulnerable communities, our very democracy, and the planet. It can feel overwhelming, but we are not powerless — and we are not alone.

Our Revolution is building out our Citizen Action Team — our growing grassroots army with networks in Washington, D.C. and every congressional district in the country.

The team met on Thursday for our first first strategy and training session, and we’re already planning actions and developing tools to fight back against Trump and the Oligarchs.

There will be opportunities to leverage our movement in the upcoming budget and tax fights in Congress — as well as influence the Democratic Party to present a unified opposition.

Now is the time we need every person of conscience to get involved — there’s something everyone can do to help, big or small. Sign up to be part of the Citizen Action Team, and we’ll loop you in on our next meeting!

Trump has forged an unholy alliance between Big Oil and Big Tech to ravage our planet — but we are not powerless.

This week, we kicked off actions with our LIVE Climate Town Hall Monday night — zeroing in on the legislative and budget fights ahead where we’ll have leverage to fight the worst of Trump and the Oil Oligarchs’ agenda.

Our coalition is joining forces to block Trump’s money pipeline to Big Oil. Leading climate organizers joined the call like Aru Shiney-Ajay of Sunrise Movement, Erich Pica of Friends of the Earth, and Jaime Minden of Zero Hour.

While we go on the offense, we’ll also stand with Greenpeace USA as they defend free speech and the right to dissent. Tim Donaghy said Greenpeace will share weekly videos of their trial, starting Feb. 24th, as they battle a lawsuit trying to silence activism and opposition.

The strategy: Target the budget reconciliation process in March with a demand to end fossil fuel subsidies. “We can’t keep drinking out of the firehose,” said Our Revolution leader Joseph Geevarghese.

We have a chance to strike a blow against the oil and gas industry and also hit oil executives in a way that undermines Trump’s entire platform. But, we’ll need Democrats to hold the line. Read more in The New Republic.

On Wednesday, we Rallied on Capitol Hill with Bernie Sanders, Ilhan Omar and our Coalition to End Polluter Handouts to launch a fight to stop our tax dollars from funding climate destruction.

People are experiencing the devastation of climate change right now. As Bernie said: “If we don’t cut carbon emissions and stop giving polluters huge tax breaks and corporate welfare, the planet we will be leaving future generations will be less and less habitable.

Our event attracted a lot of press to get our message out and also featured powerful testimony by climate allies like Sens. Ed Markey and Chris Van Hollen, Robert Weissman of Public Citizen, Rev. Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus.

As the Trump Administration attacks clean energy and environmental programs, community-owned clean energy projects are more important than ever.

When we organize, we can fight to protect the good green jobs, cleaner air, and lower energy costs created by Direct Pay and other programs from Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

This week, the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center joined Organized Power in Numbers to release a new report — Building Equity with Direct Pay: Seizing the Moment for Racial Justice, Community Ownership, and Worker Power.

This report shares success stories from the first two years of implementation and what has been learned — including the importance of investing in organizing, technical assistance, centering workers and racial justice, and filling the gap on financing.

BEATING BACK THE PARTY ELITE

To defeat Trump and the Oligarchs, we need a true Opposition Party that isn’t bought by the billionaires.

That’s why Our Revolution organized to beat back the Political Establishment - and its billionaire backers - to help elect Ken Martin as the new chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Ken - chair of the Minnesota state party - defeated his main rival who was backed by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and bankrolled by billionaires like Reid Hoffman and ‘liberal’ dark money groups.

We hosted the only grassroots DNC Candidate Forum of the race, flooded the voting members with calls, and rallied in-person at the DNC Election — and it worked. Our voices were heard, but we have more work to do to steer the Democratic Party away from corporate control and recenter the working class.

Our Revolution is one of the only grassroots political groups doing this work inside the party. Can you chip in to help us keep up the pressure for change?

★ ★ ★

And, we have to keep up the pressure on elected Democrats to HOLD THE LINE. This week, Senate Dems voted in lockstep against Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tulsi Gabbard, and other Trump nominees. But that hasn’t been the case in recent weeks!

It was totally unacceptable that Democratic Senators like John Fetterman, Kirsten Gillibrand, and others voted YES on dangerous, far-right nominees like Marco Rubio for State Department, fracking CEO Chris Wright for Department of Energy, and more.

We are organizing citizens across our Republic to stand up to Trump’s corrupt regime, and we’re demanding a unified opposition from the Democratic leaders.

Collaboration is unacceptable. We must stand united to stop the slide into authoritarian capitalism. Add your name at the link below, we’ll deliver the message straight to Senate offices and keep up the temperature with a flood of calls into the Senate.

With our impact on the direction of new DNC leadership, we now have a foothold to push for real change in the party.

So far, more than 10,000 grassroots volunteers, donors and local leaders have signed on demanding these necessary reforms. It’s time for the Democratic Party to reject corporate money, increase transparency and rebuild a multiracial, working-class base. Let’s get to work!

NEW ENDORSEMENT!

Our first endorsement of 2025, Our Revolution is proud to support Aisha Braveboy in a special election March 4th for County Executive in Prince George's County, Maryland.

This is a big year for down-ballot elections — and we need candidates like Aisha who will help make our communities more resilient under Trump and our state and local governments more responsive to We the People.

Aisha has been a champion of raising the minimum wage, criminal justice reform, and preserving our environment. As State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, Braveboy ended cash bail and created the state’s first conviction integrity review unit — which led to the release of seven people sentenced to life as juveniles.

REBECCA MCCLOUD FOR BOARD OF ALDERS WARD 11 ST. LOUIS, MO

Our Revolution is endorsing Rebecca McCloud for the St. Louis Board of Alders, Ward 11, to build out our growing progressive voting block in the city.
We have been invested in electing a progressive governing majority in St. Louis for a few election cycles — and it’s paying off! Our champions have successfully pushed initiatives for labor, wages, direct democracy, universal basic income and more.
With her focus on economic development, mental health, and better food systems, Rebecca McCloud will be a great addition and partner in the effort to deliver for the people of St. Louis.

While Congressional Democrats dither in DC, Trump and the Oligarchs are aggressively moving to consolidate control over our government by engaging in unlawful and unConstitutional acts by:

  • Purging career civil servants and busting unions;
  • Firing independent Inspector Generals and Commissioners of the EEOC, FDA;
  • Embedding loyalists and top lieutenants of CEOs in top posts;
  • Gagging experts at agencies across the government, including the CDC and EPA;
  • Breaking into sensitive databases and mining citizen private data;
  • Weaponizing the DOJ and the FBI against opponents…

Trump and the Oligarchs are trying to break the guardrails of our fragile democracy. We will not let them.

We are organizing citizens across our Republic to stand up to this corrupt regime, and we’re demanding a unified opposition from the Democratic Congressional Leaders.

Collaboration is unacceptable.

BEATING BACK THE PARTY ELITE

To defeat Trump and the Oligarchs, we need a true Opposition Party that isn’t bought by the billionaires. That’s why Our Revolution organized to beat back the Political Establishment - and its billionaire backers - to elect Ken Martin to serve as the new chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Ken - chair of the Minnesota state party - defeated his main rival who was backed by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and bankrolled by billionaires like Reid Hoffman and ‘liberal’ dark money groups.

Even though only 448 DNC party insiders got to vote, Our Revolution’s grassroots-powered Citizen Action Team: Hold the Party Accountable worked to make sure our voices were heard - we hosted the only grassroots DNC Candidate Forum of the race, sent letters, and made calls.

Even though we’ve won, our work is not done. Our Revolution Leader Joseph Geevarghese wrote in The Nation about how the grassroots must hold the new Democratic leadership accountable.

“The decades-long dependence on billionaires has fundamentally undermined the Democratic Party’s credibility as an opposition party. Democrats claimed to be the party of the working class—while still taking money from the same elites who rig the system,” Joseph wrote.

“If the party is serious about becoming a true opposition force, it must now fully commit to a grassroots fundraising model—one that rejects corporate influence and restores faith in its ability to fight for working-class Americans.”

★ ★ ★

In addition to electing a new DNC chair, we also organized to elect Jane Kleeb — an Our Revolution founding board member and climate activist — as the next President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs (ASDC) and Vice Chair of the Party.

Jane, who also serves as Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, is committed to investing resources in State Parties and strengthening grassroots organizing.

With true insurgents like Ken and Jane at the top of the Party, it’s time to ramp up our work to hold Democrats accountable to working people, not billionaires and corporate consultants.

Our Revolution is one of the only grassroots political groups doing this work inside the party. Can you chip in to help us keep up the pressure for change?

2025 isn’t an off-year for elections -- in fact, there are thousands of races at the state and local level with progressives running for mayor, city council, state offices, and more.

Our goal is to build power. Our movement elected a progressive voting bloc in Congress with the Progressive Caucus — and this year is a chance to do the same in cities and counties across the country.

Proof of concept: In St. Louis, Our Revolution Board Member Megan Green ran for city alderman and realized she needed allies serving alongside her to move a progressive agenda. So she partnered with Our Revolution and ran progressive slates over multiple cycles, creating a governing majority in the city — from mayor to council and more.

If progressives are going to build power in the United States, we have to return to our roots and do it from the bottom up.

If you’re a candidate running for election or re-election, join Megan Green and the Our Revolution Political Team for a 2025 Candidate Meetup to learn about our endorsement process and how we support candidates with strategic resources to win elections and build power for the long haul.

This Is a 911 Moment for the DNC

By Homepage

To: Democratic National Committee Members
From: Our Revolution
Subject: This Is a 911 Moment for the DNC

____________________________________________________________________________

As President Biden warned us in his farewell address, the danger to our democracy has never been more urgent. “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, … powerful forces want to wield their unchecked influence to eliminate the steps we’ve taken to tackle the climate crisis … the potential rise of a tech-industrial complex could pose real dangers for our country as well.”

January 20th provided a chilling illustration of Biden’s words when President Trump took the Oath of Office, flanked by Big Oil and Tech Oligarchs.

Immediately, the Trump Administration began executing a clear plan to turn our government into a tool of oligarchic dominance. Trump is purging career servants and replacing them with political and industry loyalists; he’s rewarding his benefactors by rolling back President Biden’s progress on climate, infrastructure, and tech regulation, while announcing plans to accelerate the expansion of fossil fuels, unregulated AI, and the crypto industry.

With Project 2025 as their blueprint, Trump’s is preparing to go even further and dismantle democracy itself.  By pledging to pardon January 6th insurrectionists, Trump is legitimizing political violence as a tool for his movement. Meanwhile, right-wing media networks, social media platforms, and dark money groups are fueling a coordinated disinformation campaign designed to erode public trust and secure minority rule for a corporate elite. At the same time, figures like Kash Patel are laying the groundwork for an expanded surveillance state, weaponizing government institutions to target opponents.

As Democrats, we must recognize this moment for what it is: a fight for the survival of democratic institutions and for an economy that works for our planet and the people, not just the wealthiest few. The trajectory we are on leads to authoritarian capitalism, climate catastrophe, and a culture of fear and repression. To stop this, we must embrace a bold vision that energizes our base, expands our coalition, and meets the urgency of the moment with action.

Our survey of over 20,000 Our Revolution members reveals deep concern among grassroots voters about the current moment”

  • 98% believe Trump’s return and the rise of the MAGA movement represent a dangerous moment for the country.  43% report feeling angry and 40% feel worried, scared, or sad.
  • 76% lack confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to fight back against Trump’s radical agenda and the corporate takeover of government.

Their message is simple: Democrats must fight back, or we will all lose. This is not just a plea from Our Revolution—it comes from our grassroots members we represent: Democratic Party volunteers, precinct captains, door-knockers, and donors.  In short, this is what rank-and-file Democrats who don’t have a seat or a vote in the DNC, but want their voices to be heard.

Significantly, Our Revolution members identified 4 top priorities for the candidates running for DNC leadership:

  1. Become a True Opposition Party – By rejecting corporate influence, dark money, and stand firmly against Trump’s policies. We need to aggressively communicate how Trump’s policies directly harm working families, gut democracy, and serve only the interests of the ultra-rich.
  2. Invest in State Parties and Grassroots Organizing – Recognizing that state parties are the direct link between the Democratic Party and the people.
  3. Demand Budget Transparency & Consultant Accountability – Ensuring grassroots donors know where their money is going and holding consultants accountable for results.
  4. Unite the Democratic Party Behind a Pro-Worker, Pro-Climate and Pro-Democracy Agenda: To mobilize the broadest possible coalition, we must make clear that our party stands unequivocally for the concerns of working people and the planet.

That’s why Our Revolution is urging every DNC leadership candidate to adopt these priorities.  In addition, we are proud to support our members running for Vice Chair positions: Jim Zogby, Michelle Deatrick, Shasti Conrad, and Jane Kleeb (ASDC). Their leadership and commitment to grassroots democracy make them strong advocates for the future of the party.

As DNC members, the decisions made now will shape the course of history.  Listen to what grassroots progressive voters have to say so we can fight for the future together.

Op-Ed: OLIGARCHY RISING, DEMOCRATS FAILING

By Uncategorized

OLIGARCHY RISING, DEMOCRATS FAILING

by Joseph Geevarghese

President Biden warned too little and too late in his farewell address on January 15,  “An oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our democracy.” Days later, on January 20, his words came to life as President Trump took the Oath of Office, flanked by Oil and Tech Oligarchs who funded his campaign. This moment signaled the beginning of a new political alignment between corporate and state power.

Trump has quickly rewarded his corporate benefactors. His first executive orders rolled back Biden-era environmental protections and boosted aggressive dirty energy production.  Meanwhile, he advanced AI and cryptocurrency policies while stripping government oversight of Big Tech. The result:  Big Tech’s need for vast energy supplies to fuel AI and crypto dovetailed seamlessly with Big Oil’s push to expand market demand for fossil fuels.

Trump is also purging career civil servants and replacing them with political loyalists and industry executives.  These actions ensure agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy serve corporate interests rather than the public good.

Trump and his benefactors’ increasing control over the public square – and their bullying of the free press – means that citizens are deprived of the information required to speak out.  Big Tech’s grip on digital platforms has fragmented public discourse, allowing misinformation to flourish. Meanwhile, surveillance technology—driven by firms like Palantir—is expanding state monitoring powers and eroding privacy protections.

Also dangerous are Trump’s pardons of the January 6 insurrectionists which will embolden extremists and likely make paramilitary-style political violence a permanent feature of our political life.

Taken together, the U.S. is fast moving toward the economic and political model of Russia, India, China, and Hungary—where strongmen are surrounded by oligarchs who rule with ruthlessness behind a facade of Democracy.

With this new oligarchy rising, America needs a real opposition party.  Yet, despite Biden’s farewell warning, Democrats are failing to speak with a unified voice about the true dangers of Trump and challenge him on every front.

Some Democratic members of Congress are breaking ranks to confirm Trump’s nominees and offering to collaborate with advancing his policy agenda.  The Democrats’ failure to act with courage or conviction is undermining the trust of rank-and-file voters and volunteers who donate and knock doors election after election.

Our Revolution recently surveyed more than 5,000 of our most active supporters, and only 14 percent said they feel ‘very confident’ that Democratic leaders will effectively counter Trump and his agenda.  Nearly nine in 10 support efforts to want Democratic politicians and party officials “to lead a real opposition party by rejecting corporate money and influence,” but the remaining 12 percent told us not to bother because they’ve already given up on the Democratic Party.

Here are two of many comments the survey received sharing similar sentiments of despair with the Democratic Party. One woman said:  “The Democratic Party needs to stop playing nice and fight fire with fire. I’m sick and disgusted today.  I am ashamed of our country and the fact that there is no real plan to overhaul the Democratic Party.”  Another commented: “I am not motivated to give Democrats money because I don’t think they know how to fight effectively and I don’t trust them to do what is necessary to effect real change.”

The base wants Democrats to provide more than reactive opposition—they want their leaders to reject corporate rule by renouncing corporate money themselves, demand Constitutional accountability from Trump, and present a unified front against his policies and personnel picks.

That’s why Our Revolution sent an open letter  to all DNC members, who are gathering to elect new leaders this weekend, to chart a new course given the oligarchic takeover underway.  But even in this they’ve managed to continue the blind push for insular control — going out of their way to shut out the public as just 448 insiders prepare to vote.

The grassroots base, progressives, young voters, working class voters, and others often shunted to the edges of the party have long been calling for a rejection of corporate power and a return to the working class roots, but this cry is reaching a crescendo.  The Party and its politicians must listen now.  They must open up transparency, break with corporate influences, and repair public trust if they want to win this existential battle.

Even Democratic governors are speaking out, speaking to Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as a group, and urging him to do all that he can to slow down the confirmation of President Trump’s nominees and to do more to block his agenda, the New York Times reported this week.

And citizens – whether Democrat, Republican or Independent – must mobilise, inform, and engage their friends and neighbors in the work of saving our nation from peril. Without concerted action, Biden’s warning of the rising American oligarchy may become the dystopian future we cannot escape.

Joseph Geevarghese is Executive Director of Our Revolution, the largest independent grassroots political action organization in the US, which was founded by Bernie Sanders in 2016.

TRUMP’S FEDERAL AID FREEZE IS AN UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK ON WORKING FAMILIES, PUBLIC GOODS, AND DEMOCRACY

TRUMP’S FEDERAL AID FREEZE IS AN UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK ON WORKING FAMILIES, PUBLIC GOODS, AND DEMOCRACY

Grassroots and Progressive Democrats Call on Senate Democrats to Respond With Urgency. Now is the time for the Democratic Party to be a real opposition Party. Our Revolution Calls on Senate Democrats to Block Trump Nominees Until the Freeze Is Reversed

Washington, D.C.  — Following the Trump administration’s sweeping freeze on federal financial assistance,  Our Revolution Executive Director, Joseph Geevarghese issued the following statement:

“Trump’s unilateral freeze on federal aid is an assault on working families, public programs, and the pillars of our already fragile social contract. This is a hair-on-fire moment, and Democrats must act accordingly. Halting funding for life-or-death programs like Medicaid, school meals, housing, child care, and other public services is a calculated effort to dismantle government services and public goods. With Trump prioritizing the billionaire class over the needs of everyday Americans, Democrats must be relentless in standing up for the people. This is policy violence, plain and simple.”

The implications of the funding freeze are clear: seniors losing access to medical care, children going hungry, and families left without critical support—all while the wealthiest Americans benefit from corporate tax breaks and deregulation. Trump’s actions amount to a power grab designed to weaken our institutions and erode the checks and balances that protect democracy.

Our Revolution is calling on the Democratic Party to be a real opposition party. We call on Senate Democrats to recognize that this is not a normal moment and to refuse to advance or confirm any of Trump’s nominees until this reckless and dangerous freeze is reversed. The Trump administration’s federal aid freeze is an unprecedented attack on public goods and working families, and it demands an equally bold response.

We are witnessing a deliberate effort to privatize public goods, weaken workers’ rights, and consolidate power for the billionaire class. Senate Democrats must rise to the occasion, because the stakes could not be higher. The question from progressives  is clear: will you stand with working families or enable Trump’s dismantling of democracy?

Our Revolution Director Joseph Geevarghese had this to say: “As Trump and his billionaire benefactors declare all-out war on the working-class, the only effective counterweight to their extreme MAGA agenda will be a Democratic Party that is ready to take on corporate influence and embrace a true populist, working-class vision for the country.”
“Our Revolution’s survey results point to an undeniable crisis of confidence in Democratic Party leadership at a time of unprecedented corporate takeover of the American federal government,” Joseph continued.
“Our Revolution is committed to holding the Trump administration accountable while also pushing for real reforms and calling out hypocrisy within the ranks of the Democratic Party.”
With just 448 DNC insiders set to elect new leadership on Feb. 1st, we will keep pressuring the party to take this seriously and chart a new course.
