★ ★ ★ BEATING BACK THE PARTY ELITE To defeat Trump and the Oligarchs, we need a true Opposition Party that isn’t bought by the billionaires. That’s why Our Revolution organized to beat back the Political Establishment - and its billionaire backers - to elect Ken Martin to serve as the new chair of the Democratic National Committee.
Ken - chair of the Minnesota state party - defeated his main rival who was backed by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and bankrolled by billionaires like Reid Hoffman and ‘liberal’ dark money groups. Even though only 448 DNC party insiders got to vote, Our Revolution’s grassroots-powered Citizen Action Team: Hold the Party Accountable worked to make sure our voices were heard - we hosted the only grassroots DNC Candidate Forum of the race, sent letters, and made calls.
Even though we’ve won, our work is not done. Our Revolution Leader Joseph Geevarghese wrote in The Nation about how the grassroots must hold the new Democratic leadership accountable. “The decades-long dependence on billionaires has fundamentally undermined the Democratic Party’s credibility as an opposition party. Democrats claimed to be the party of the working class—while still taking money from the same elites who rig the system,” Joseph wrote. “If the party is serious about becoming a true opposition force, it must now fully commit to a grassroots fundraising model—one that rejects corporate influence and restores faith in its ability to fight for working-class Americans.” ★ ★ ★
In addition to electing a new DNC chair, we also organized to elect Jane Kleeb — an Our Revolution founding board member and climate activist — as the next President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs (ASDC) and Vice Chair of the Party. Jane, who also serves as Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, is committed to investing resources in State Parties and strengthening grassroots organizing. With true insurgents like Ken and Jane at the top of the Party, it’s time to ramp up our work to hold Democrats accountable to working people, not billionaires and corporate consultants. ★ ★ ★
With our impact on the direction of new DNC leadership, we now have a foothold to push for real change in the party. So far, more than 10,000 grassroots volunteers, donors and local leaders have signed on demanding these necessary party reforms. It’s time for the Democratic party to reject corporate money, increase transparency and accountability and rebuild a multiracial, working-class base. Let’s get to work to grow our power in the party, recenter the working class, regain voter trust, and win crucial elections. ★ ★ ★
2025 isn’t an off-year for elections -- in fact, there are thousands of races at the state and local level with progressives running for mayor, city council, state offices, and more. Our goal is to build power. Our movement elected a progressive voting bloc in Congress with the Progressive Caucus — and this year is a chance to do the same in cities and counties across the country. Proof of concept: In St. Louis, Our Revolution Board Member Megan Green ran for city alderman and realized she needed allies serving alongside her to move a progressive agenda. So she partnered with Our Revolution and ran progressive slates over multiple cycles, creating a governing majority in the city — from mayor to council and more. If progressives are going to build power in the United States, we have to return to our roots and do it from the bottom up. If you’re a candidate running for election or re-election, join Megan Green and the Our Revolution Political Team for a 2025 Candidate Meetup to learn about our endorsement process and how we support candidates with strategic resources to win elections and build power for the long haul. As President Biden warned us in his farewell address, the danger to our democracy has never been more urgent. “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, … powerful forces want to wield their unchecked influence to eliminate the steps we’ve taken to tackle the climate crisis … the potential rise of a tech-industrial complex could pose real dangers for our country as well.”
January 20th provided a chilling illustration of Biden’s words when President Trump took the Oath of Office, flanked by Big Oil and Tech Oligarchs.
Immediately, the Trump Administration began executing a clear plan to turn our government into a tool of oligarchic dominance. Trump is purging career servants and replacing them with political and industry loyalists; he’s rewarding his benefactors by rolling back President Biden’s progress on climate, infrastructure, and tech regulation, while announcing plans to accelerate the expansion of fossil fuels, unregulated AI, and the crypto industry.
With Project 2025 as their blueprint, Trump’s is preparing to go even further and dismantle democracy itself. By pledging to pardon January 6th insurrectionists, Trump is legitimizing political violence as a tool for his movement. Meanwhile, right-wing media networks, social media platforms, and dark money groups are fueling a coordinated disinformation campaign designed to erode public trust and secure minority rule for a corporate elite. At the same time, figures like Kash Patel are laying the groundwork for an expanded surveillance state, weaponizing government institutions to target opponents.
As Democrats, we must recognize this moment for what it is: a fight for the survival of democratic institutions and for an economy that works for our planet and the people, not just the wealthiest few. The trajectory we are on leads to authoritarian capitalism, climate catastrophe, and a culture of fear and repression. To stop this, we must embrace a bold vision that energizes our base, expands our coalition, and meets the urgency of the moment with action.
Our survey of over 20,000 Our Revolution members reveals deep concern among grassroots voters about the current moment”
Their message is simple: Democrats must fight back, or we will all lose. This is not just a plea from Our Revolution—it comes from our grassroots members we represent: Democratic Party volunteers, precinct captains, door-knockers, and donors. In short, this is what rank-and-file Democrats who don’t have a seat or a vote in the DNC, but want their voices to be heard.
Significantly, Our Revolution members identified 4 top priorities for the candidates running for DNC leadership:
That’s why Our Revolution is urging every DNC leadership candidate to adopt these priorities. In addition, we are proud to support our members running for Vice Chair positions: Jim Zogby, Michelle Deatrick, Shasti Conrad, and Jane Kleeb (ASDC). Their leadership and commitment to grassroots democracy make them strong advocates for the future of the party.
As DNC members, the decisions made now will shape the course of history. Listen to what grassroots progressive voters have to say so we can fight for the future together.
OLIGARCHY RISING, DEMOCRATS FAILING
by Joseph Geevarghese
President Biden warned too little and too late in his farewell address on January 15, “An oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our democracy.” Days later, on January 20, his words came to life as President Trump took the Oath of Office, flanked by Oil and Tech Oligarchs who funded his campaign. This moment signaled the beginning of a new political alignment between corporate and state power.
Trump has quickly rewarded his corporate benefactors. His first executive orders rolled back Biden-era environmental protections and boosted aggressive dirty energy production. Meanwhile, he advanced AI and cryptocurrency policies while stripping government oversight of Big Tech. The result: Big Tech’s need for vast energy supplies to fuel AI and crypto dovetailed seamlessly with Big Oil’s push to expand market demand for fossil fuels.
Trump is also purging career civil servants and replacing them with political loyalists and industry executives. These actions ensure agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy serve corporate interests rather than the public good.
Trump and his benefactors’ increasing control over the public square – and their bullying of the free press – means that citizens are deprived of the information required to speak out. Big Tech’s grip on digital platforms has fragmented public discourse, allowing misinformation to flourish. Meanwhile, surveillance technology—driven by firms like Palantir—is expanding state monitoring powers and eroding privacy protections.
Also dangerous are Trump’s pardons of the January 6 insurrectionists which will embolden extremists and likely make paramilitary-style political violence a permanent feature of our political life.
Taken together, the U.S. is fast moving toward the economic and political model of Russia, India, China, and Hungary—where strongmen are surrounded by oligarchs who rule with ruthlessness behind a facade of Democracy.
With this new oligarchy rising, America needs a real opposition party. Yet, despite Biden’s farewell warning, Democrats are failing to speak with a unified voice about the true dangers of Trump and challenge him on every front.
Some Democratic members of Congress are breaking ranks to confirm Trump’s nominees and offering to collaborate with advancing his policy agenda. The Democrats’ failure to act with courage or conviction is undermining the trust of rank-and-file voters and volunteers who donate and knock doors election after election.
Our Revolution recently surveyed more than 5,000 of our most active supporters, and only 14 percent said they feel ‘very confident’ that Democratic leaders will effectively counter Trump and his agenda. Nearly nine in 10 support efforts to want Democratic politicians and party officials “to lead a real opposition party by rejecting corporate money and influence,” but the remaining 12 percent told us not to bother because they’ve already given up on the Democratic Party.
Here are two of many comments the survey received sharing similar sentiments of despair with the Democratic Party. One woman said: “The Democratic Party needs to stop playing nice and fight fire with fire. I’m sick and disgusted today. I am ashamed of our country and the fact that there is no real plan to overhaul the Democratic Party.” Another commented: “I am not motivated to give Democrats money because I don’t think they know how to fight effectively and I don’t trust them to do what is necessary to effect real change.”
The base wants Democrats to provide more than reactive opposition—they want their leaders to reject corporate rule by renouncing corporate money themselves, demand Constitutional accountability from Trump, and present a unified front against his policies and personnel picks.
That’s why Our Revolution sent an open letter to all DNC members, who are gathering to elect new leaders this weekend, to chart a new course given the oligarchic takeover underway. But even in this they’ve managed to continue the blind push for insular control — going out of their way to shut out the public as just 448 insiders prepare to vote.
The grassroots base, progressives, young voters, working class voters, and others often shunted to the edges of the party have long been calling for a rejection of corporate power and a return to the working class roots, but this cry is reaching a crescendo. The Party and its politicians must listen now. They must open up transparency, break with corporate influences, and repair public trust if they want to win this existential battle.
Even Democratic governors are speaking out, speaking to Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as a group, and urging him to do all that he can to slow down the confirmation of President Trump’s nominees and to do more to block his agenda, the New York Times reported this week.
And citizens – whether Democrat, Republican or Independent – must mobilise, inform, and engage their friends and neighbors in the work of saving our nation from peril. Without concerted action, Biden’s warning of the rising American oligarchy may become the dystopian future we cannot escape.

TRUMP’S FEDERAL AID FREEZE IS AN UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK ON WORKING FAMILIES, PUBLIC GOODS, AND DEMOCRACY
Grassroots and Progressive Democrats Call on Senate Democrats to Respond With Urgency. Now is the time for the Democratic Party to be a real opposition Party. Our Revolution Calls on Senate Democrats to Block Trump Nominees Until the Freeze Is Reversed
Washington, D.C. — Following the Trump administration’s sweeping freeze on federal financial assistance, Our Revolution Executive Director, Joseph Geevarghese issued the following statement:
“Trump’s unilateral freeze on federal aid is an assault on working families, public programs, and the pillars of our already fragile social contract. This is a hair-on-fire moment, and Democrats must act accordingly. Halting funding for life-or-death programs like Medicaid, school meals, housing, child care, and other public services is a calculated effort to dismantle government services and public goods. With Trump prioritizing the billionaire class over the needs of everyday Americans, Democrats must be relentless in standing up for the people. This is policy violence, plain and simple.”
The implications of the funding freeze are clear: seniors losing access to medical care, children going hungry, and families left without critical support—all while the wealthiest Americans benefit from corporate tax breaks and deregulation. Trump’s actions amount to a power grab designed to weaken our institutions and erode the checks and balances that protect democracy.
Our Revolution is calling on the Democratic Party to be a real opposition party. We call on Senate Democrats to recognize that this is not a normal moment and to refuse to advance or confirm any of Trump’s nominees until this reckless and dangerous freeze is reversed. The Trump administration’s federal aid freeze is an unprecedented attack on public goods and working families, and it demands an equally bold response.
We are witnessing a deliberate effort to privatize public goods, weaken workers’ rights, and consolidate power for the billionaire class. Senate Democrats must rise to the occasion, because the stakes could not be higher. The question from progressives is clear: will you stand with working families or enable Trump’s dismantling of democracy?

Survey of 2,000 Progressives Reveals Alarming Crisis of Confidence in Democratic Leadership as Trump Returns to the White House
In the new survey published by Our Revolution, only 14% of respondents express strong confidence that Democratic leaders will work to block the worst of the Trump agenda.
Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese is available to comment on the survey results and the future of progressive activism during Trump’s second term.
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Our Revolution, the nation’s largest progressive political organizing group, is releasing the findings of a sweeping new survey of more than 2,000 of the organization’s members conducted in the immediate aftermath of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The respondents, a subset of Our Revolution’s grassroots network of approximately 8 million supporters in all 50 states, include rank-in-file Democratic Party activists and base voters, many of whom supported Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 presidential primary.
Topline findings from the survey reveal that:
“These survey results point to an undeniable crisis of confidence in Democratic leadership at a time of unprecedented corporate takeover of the American federal government,” said Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese. “As Trump and his billionaire benefactors declare all-out war on the working-class, the only effective counterweight to their extreme MAGA agenda will be a Democratic Party that is ready to take on corporate influence and embrace a true populist, working-class vision for the country. Our Revolution is committed to holding the Trump administration accountable while also pushing for real reforms and calling out hypocrisy within the ranks of the Democratic Party.”

TRUMP’S INAUGURAL SPEECH SIGNALS AN ADMINISTRATION BUILT ON FEAR, CORPORATE LOYALTY, AND A RETURN TO A NEW GILDED AGE
In his inaugural address, Trump outlined an agenda that cements an alliance of state and corporate power, ushering in a new Gilded Age where billionaires and tech CEOs take precedence over working Americans. His promises prioritize fear-mongering and corporate interests over the real crises facing working-class Americans.
Washington, D.C. — Following Donald J. Trump’s inaugural speech, Our Revolution Executive Director, Joseph Geevarghese issued the following statement:
“Trump’s inauguration made it unmistakably clear that there is an unholy alliance between state and corporate power. His presidency is set to openly serve the billionaire class—not working people. The visual of the event says it all. While tech CEOs and oligarchs were given center stage, there was a glaring absence of any working people — gone were the hard hats, sanitation and McDonald’s workers who were used as props on the campaign trail.
As for the substance of his speech, the forgotten men and women of America seemed to be forgotten again. There was no mention of improving wages or expanding protections for workers who keep our economy running every day — but Trump was keen to focus on how he’ll funnel our tax dollars to Elon Musk’s mission to Mars and the oil and gas executives so they can “drill baby drill.” His rhetoric of division and manufactured crises is a dangerous distraction from the true emergencies threatening our nation: skyrocketing inequality, climate change, and the erosion of workers’ rights.
In his inaugural speech, Trump outlined several troubling priorities, including his intent to sign executive orders around the following:
Our Revolution is ready to fight back against the worst of the Trump administration—the hypocrisy, the self-dealing, and the attacks on our people and planet. We will also employ a strategy of pressuring Trump to live up to his rhetoric aimed at improving life for working people— such as bringing back manufacturing jobs and cutting the Pentagon budget.
Our Revolution is committed to holding this administration accountable while pushing for real solutions that prioritize the working class over corporate interests. We are not going to allow Trump and the Trump family to privatize our government and plunder our tax dollars to enrich themselves and their cronies in the billionaire class.
